 Professional Experience

Mississippi Technology Alliance - Director of Strategic Biomass Initiative

Sumesh was selected for this position in July 2005, to head a $4.2 million project which is partly funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and is focused on commercialization of late-stage or near-term biomass related technologies that will further the "biorefinery" concept.

Mississippi Technology Alliance - Mississippi Alternative Energy Enterprise (MAEE)

Project Development Engineer

Evaluate technical and financial feasibility, and provide oversight for energy projects based on solar, wind, biomass, and green power resources.  Assess pre-commercial and commercial energy technologies.  Develop markets for alternative energy products and renewable fuels.  Liaison with utilities, industry, academia, government, and non-profit organizations. Publish magazine articles and give numerous presentations on energy issues.  Wrote state and federal grants for projects totaling $1.6 million.

Sumesh represents the 10-state southeast region on the Energy Committee of the National Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils.

This committee is responsible for researching and reporting on the use of biomass technologies that are suitable for rural America and will help protect soil and water resources and stimulate local economies.  The Energy Committee members work in conjunction with the Community Development team members.

Mississippi Development Authority - Energy Division, Jackson, Mississippi

Contract Engineer: Evaluated energy consumption patterns for commercial sites and recommended energy efficiency measures.  Served on the Landfill Methane Outreach Program committee.

(formerly) Mississippi Chemical Corporation (MCC), R&D Division, Yazoo City, Mississippi

Positions: Research Project Leader, Senior Instrument Specialist, Chemical Microscopist

Significant Accomplishments

  • Research on molybdate-based corrosion inhibitors enabled MCC to be the first in the fertilizer industry to adopt an improved formulation for nitrogen based liquid fertilizers.
  • Devised a tank management program for aboveground fertilizer storage tanks that was adopted by the company and some of its largest customers.
  • Technical analysis saved about $1 million in potential downtime and repairs on a co-gen turbine.
  • Purchased and setup a state-of- the-art Electron Microscopy Laboratory valued at $450,000.

Project Management and Customer Service

  •       Lead various Product Quality teams yielding process cost savings of about $100,000 per year.
  •       Participated in a "Leadership Series" that included workshops on key management issues.
  •       Provided technical support for manufacturing facilities and customers nationwide.
  •       Lead cross-functional teams of several employees to visit customers and evaluate their needs.
  •       Worked directly with Sales to develop methods and surveys for improving customer satisfaction.
  •       Supported field sales by providing value-added services and educational seminars to customers.
  •       Setup a system for tracking customer complaints and reporting results more efficiently.
  •       Conducted safety seminars and inspections to comply with laboratory OSHA regulations.

 Education and Honors

Fall 2009         Doctor of Philosophy in International Development

(Expected)      University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Besides economic development, this program focuses on the social, political, and technological aspects of development as well.  This is a unique "hybrid-delivery" doctoral program that uses the Internet as well as in-person classroom and fieldtrip meetings to educate the students.  His research interests include the evaluation renewable energy technology adoption and the biotechnology sector in India.  His dissertation is focused on looking at innovation among the smaller Indian biotech companies.
